Jigging
When a bait or lure is vertically lifted and dropped, this is called jigging. For obvious reasons, this is the only type of action that can be imparted while ice fishing. In open water, jigging can be done when fish set up thick. Also this can be done from bridges and is commonly done offshore in saltwater.
The key is keeping good line control and braided line will help reduce stretch. Weighted hooks are used and often tipped with bait. Locating fish wish a fish finder helps catch fish while jigging.
