Lake Trout
The Lake Trout are native to New Hampshire - remaining in large cool lakes where they feast primarily on rainbow smelt as forage and any species as necessary. Lake Trout can be very
aggressive although they will be very selective and inactive during non-feeding times. For this reason, they are fairly elusive to the occasional angler who doesn’t focus their tactics for this species.
The experienced angler can catch Lake Trout throughout the entire season by following their feeding activities and movement within the lake. The Lake Trout fishery in New Hampshire is very strong and complements the landlocked Rainbow Trout fishery. It is important that fisherman keep Lake Trout fisheries healthy by harvesting them by both ice fishing and open water fishing. Lake Trout have been know to overtake certain fisheries resulting in overall smaller size.
Once hooked, Lake Trout are bullish in their fight - remaining below the surface and shaking their heads throughout the fight. It is for this reason that when compared to a Rainbow Trout, that they are not as sought after. May I suggest since the fact that Lake Trout are a native fish, respect is well deserved for a good size Lake Trout over 24 inches - as it represents a strong barometer of the fishery. Practice safe release using rubber nets and carefully revive the fish after removing the hook, and since many Lake Trout come from deep water, you may need to take extra care in revival, or if unsuccessful, keep it for the table (if it meets minimum length). As table fare, Lake Trout must be cooked as fillets and without the skin. This will give a nice golden white fish that can be fried, baked or used in chowder.
