Atlantic Salmon

The Atlantic Salmon exists primarily in New Hampshire as a landlocked variety - remaining in large cool lakes where they feast primarily on rainbow smelt as forage.   Salmon are very aggressive although they will be very selective and inactive during non-feeding times.  For this reason, they are fairly elusive to the occasional angler who doesn’t focus their tactics for this species.  

The experienced angler can catch Salmon throughout the entire season by following their feeding activities and movement within the lake.    The Salmon fishery in New Hampshire is very special and is management by a dedicated team at the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.  

The reason this species is so special is the acrobatic nature of the fight once hooked.  On average a two pound fish will leap from the water at least 3-5 times during most fights.   Be prepared for a fast run once they see the boat or the net.    Practice safe release using rubber nets and carefully revive the fish after removing the hook.   Since they remain in freshwater, you will find that as table fare, Atlantic Salmon from the supermarket to taste much better, although it may be expensive.   There is nothing more of a waste than seeing Salmon fillets (trophies) in one’s freezer with improper packaging resulting in disposal due to freezer burn.
