Saltwater
Fishing in saltwater can be categorized as offshore, inshore, surf, and estuaries. As oceans are vast and techniques are far too numerous to mention here, we will limit our discussion of saltwater to discuss striped bass, bluefish and scup or porgy.
Inshore fishing requires a boat to stay within a mile from the shoreline. As striped bass migrate, schools of bass and blues can be seen busting bait, especially if you see congregations of birds. The location of thesed events will vary daily, water temperature and tides. Often trolling with wide spreads will allow for great catch rates especially when fish are not busting bait.
Surf fishing from the beach or bridges offer good chances to catch big fish. Using live or dead bait will do the trick. Again tide is very critical to fishing success, along with making sure the fish are in. Docks and bridges are excellent places to fish. Often if you find scup (porgy) you will soon find some stripers. Scup are saltwater panfish which are fun for kids.
Estuaries are rivers, lakes, and ponds that empty into the ocean and are affected with tides. If the fish are in, fishing from canoes, kayaks, and other small craft are now possible as estuaries offer protection. Be aware of rip currents especially during mid tides.
