Spin Casting
Any rod and reel capable of delivering mono filament, fluorocarbon, or braided line in a single casting motion - this is our definition of spin casting. A level wind reel in our opinion is primarily for trolling or jigging. Push button spin cast, spinning reels with a flip bail, and bait casting reels all fit the category of spin casting.
We like bait casting reels most since casting and retrieving does not add twist into the line. However, casting this type of reel is the most difficult as the tensile force of the cast on the line must be dialed in and kept fairly consistent as not to tangle the line in the reel spool. You need to repeat cast after cast with the same force to maximize distance. Changing lures with different air drag and weight along with the wind require minor reel brake adjustment. Fishing in tight place where each cast may require different line forces at the reel, bait casting reels can be bothersome.
Using bait casters from a boat allows for repetitious casting. Also, bait casting reels can double for use with down riggers. After a day of fishing without line twist is a joy, but not all fishing situations allow for this reel.
A spinning reel is the all purpose tool for fishing. If you are sight fishing or using bait, a spinning reel allows you to finesse the cast with great precision. Tight structures show how a spinning reel can excel. Line twist will be a problem especially with a lot of casting. Using a swivel will help but not eliminate twist.
For kids, spin cast reels with a button or a lever work well. We have seen the lever work best for small hands.
It is important to balance the rod with a reel to minimize the weight at the tip of the rod, which equates to torque and thus leads to arm fatigue.
